Garth Jankovic & Shalom Students Create Mural for School

Garth Jankovic

Well known local artist Garth Jankovic has been previously immortalised with a portrait in the Townsville CBD for his contribution to the local community, has been out at Shalom Christian College.  The students in September 2016 got to work with Garth to further their skills and to understand the commercial aspects of taking your art to the people with local projects that Garth is known for.

Please check out the video below which shows some of the fun that happened during his collaboration with our creative Shalom students, overseen by our very own resident Art teacher Tegan Murphy.

The video is scored by Gurrumul who kindly donated his song for Shalom Christian College.  Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is a member of the Gumatj clan from Elcho Island which is off the coast of North Eastern Arnhem Island.  A number of students at Shalom come from Elcho Island and Gurrumul is related to current students at the school.  Gurrumul is a platinum award winning artist who inspires budding young Indigenous artists all around Australia.  He has been around the world to perform his unique style of music which has attracted many fans from Elton John to Will.I.Am.

What an honour for Shalom students and the school to have this fantastic song as a backdrop for their cultural pursuits.

Thank you Gurrumul!!!
